← All Projects. SIS.

The SIS is the UK’s Secret Intelligence Service, also known as MI6, whose work focuses around keeping the nation safe and prosperous. I was given the task of redesigning their website to put my web design and UI/UX skills to the test.

Understanding the brief.

The brief I was given identified recruitment as the main focus for the new homepage, stating that this is an area where SIS’s current website is falling short. They also specified that the agency wanted to attract younger, tech savvy users to convert into recruits, so wanted the new design to be clean, modern and appealing to this new demographic.

They also noted that SIS wanted to increase awareness around what they do as an agency, as well as showcase their prestigious heritage.

Designing to convert.

As the brief put a spotlight on SIS’s recruitment drive, I decided to make this the focus of the hero. I made sure to include a clear call to action which would take the user to the careers page, where they could read a complete description of all available roles. Using a sticky hamburger style navigation with a stand alone careers button ensured that the user would be prompted to visit the careers page throughout the experience.

Creating a clean, brand appropriate design.

I chose a dark theme for the hero to both portray the sense of mystery that surrounds SIS, and also to help focus and guide the user’s attention with minimal distractions.

When it came to chosing the colour palette for the site, I decided to draw out the colour from SIS’s logo to incorporate their branding, but also decided to introduce another colour that would command more attention for elements such as buttons. I chose orange as psychologically, it is a colour associated with success and determination, and also sits opposite to teal on the colour wheel, creating a nice visual contrast.
